Client's presenting issues:
Client has cancer and has been undergoing treatment for the past 23 months - she has now been
through radiotherapy and chemotherapy and is still receiving ongoing medical care although the
majority of her treatment has now taken place. Client works in a school as a teacher and has been
shielding due to the pandemic. She has continued to work throughout her health issues, and for the
past year most of this has been from home (with a short period of a few weeks spent in school). Client
is now facing a return to work on 31st March dependent on government advice - she reports having
mixed feelings about this
- feeling isolated and keen to get back to her role, as she does not like remote working, but also feeling
anxious about how she will cope in her role adjusting to new Covid procedures too.
What does the client want from counselling?
Support in facing her return to work and overcoming anxieties around this.
How well is the client able to cope with their situation?
Client is an anxious person and worries a lot. She felt anxious about this session and we talked about that. She is anxious about returning to work as she feels it is unsafe to do so at this time. We explored her options. She is talking with OH tomorrow and may raise her worries with them. She is worried she will lose her job. We looked at meditation and mindfullness as a way of calming the mind and grounding her. She is only in for one day this week on Thursday and is reasonably confident she can cope with that.
What is the client’s support network? (Family, friends, GP, Mental Health team etc.)
Client has family
and friends for support. She feels her employer have been supportive throughout, and she has had an
OH referral which looked at necessary adjustments to her duties. She is also in regular contact with GP
/ healthcare professionals.
