Psychological Assessments

The provision of psychological and psychiatric assessments is a powerful and pro-active resource that helps employers reach a resolution in complex and long-term cases of stress-related sickness absence.

The HR initiated intervention is commonly used for addressing serious situations that have become 'stuck' and to measure risk when an employee feels ready to return to work in a safety sensitive role.

We offer a variety of different psychological and CBT assessments, which are a detailed and professional analysis of an employee’s psychological condition or risk profile. This can be invaluable in a disciplinary and/or legal situations.

Further information about the type and range of specialist expertise is shown below and our experts can advise you on which type of assessment best suits your case.

Here are some examples of situations where assessments can add real value:

  • Capability assessment and return to work action plan for an employee following stress-related sickness absence
  • Workplace adjustment and capability analysis for a high risk employee to facilitate a return-to-work
  • Psychological risk assessment needed because of a safety sensitive and/or safe-guarding environment
  • Psychological assessment and therapeutic recommendations for a complex employee case where substantial support or change in behaviour is a priority
  • Analysis required of whether an employee’s symptoms are the result of a medical illness or mental health
  • On-site assessment and/or analysis of support required for an employee who may be dyslexic or have other adult educational and learning needs.

Our return-to-work assessment is a management initiated intervention, allowing a qualified occupational psychologist to conduct an interview/assessment with an employee to resolve a stress or performance-related sickness absence problem. The objective of the process is to determine the underlying causes of the absence. Crucially, the return to work assessment also seeks to determine how best the employee can be supported back into work, and will advise on any adjustments or changes in job role that may be required.

A psychological risk assessment enables employers to effectively measure risk if and when an employee returns to work after a serious psychological condition. Employees in these circumstances can pose a risk either to themselves, an organisation, or to colleagues working with them. Risk assessments are particularly valuable in safety sensitive roles and in safeguarding environments where an employee may have contact with vulnerable children or adults. The accompanying assessment report is a detailed and professional analysis of the employee’s risk profile and provides an authoritative and independent assessment of an employee’s ability to safely to return to the workplace.

A psychiatric assessment is carried out by a fully qualified physician who specialises in psychiatry. A psychiatric assessment will be conducted to determine whether a patient's symptoms are the result of a medical or psychological illness. Our experienced psychiatric consultants can advise employers on the circumstances when a full psychiatric assessment may be required.

CBT is an increasingly popular therapeutic model for treating anxiety, depression and many other common mental health problems. Using a mixture of cognitive and behavioural therapies, CBT takes a practical approach with active participation from the client.

This approach focuses on looking for ways to improve someone’s situation now, rather than gaining insight into their past and analysing how problems may have arisen.

CBT has been shown to help people with various specific conditions, including

  • Certain anxiety disorders, including phobias, panic attacks and panic disorder.
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • OCD
  • Body dysmorphic disorder
  • Anger management
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Substance addiction (drug, alcohol etc)
  • Chronic (persistent) pain
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME)

We offer both CBT and Counselling using a CBT approach.

CBT
Carried out by one of our fully qualified and specialist CBT psychologists, accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

The therapy begins with an in depth assessment, resulting in the recommendation of a specific number of sessions and theraputic deliverables.

Counselling using a CBT approach
Provided by one of our BACP qualified counsellors, this service incorporates a CBT counselling approach which is very effective for most non-critical conditions. Charged at standard counselling rates, this service shows a real saving when compared with CBT.

Our Full Employee Assistance Programme package includes CBT counselling as a standard element within the core service.

There are a number of reasons why an employee may be underperforming, which are not always so easy to recognise within the management skills of an organisation. Our expertise in this area can sensitively deal with these issues, whilst finding out the root cause of the issues and finding effective solutions.

Adult special educational and learning needs, such as Dyslexia, are supported by identifying an employee’s cognitive profile, understanding their strengths and weaknesses and understanding how their special needs may affect them psychologically, in and out of the workplace.

High potential employees can be “held back” because of their needs, but when properly supported, your organisation can realise untapped talent.

We can provide specialist on-site assessments to help employers determine if employees are affected by dyslexia or by other educational and learning needs.  Our assessor will de-brief HR or the commissioning manager, and will produce a detailed report outlining what actions, adjustments or other changes may be appropriate to help your employee manage their special need and improve their performance
